Chapter Twenty-One

Master Highclaw led the group down a sandstone hallway where two open chambers awaited them. Mourdock and Hasatan took Anna into one, while Scallywag, Shanks, and Dan took Jack into the other. The chamber was a large, well lit, egg-shaped room with a bed in its center. The Paragons escorting the group helped to move Jack from the gurney onto the bed and then left them to wait, sealing them inside.

Scallywag paced around the room restlessly while Shanks took a seat in a chair next to Jack’s bed. Scallywag studied the smooth white walls, which were noticeably different from the coarse sandstone bricks he’d seen everywhere else. Beyond that, the chamber contained no extra bells, whistles, art, or decoration. I was just a simple, bland room.

“Oy, robot,” Scallywag said to Dan, “break out some o’ that rum ya packed fer me. I’m guessin’ we’re gonna be here a while.”

Thus, Scallywag plopped himself down on the floor and nursed a bottle of Claxagaar rum while they waited for what seemed a rather long time. Much to Scallywag’s annoyance, every time he felt as though he were getting a nice buzz going, for some reason, it disappeared rather quickly.

“Danny-boy,” Scallywag said, “this rum ya packed… ya got it from me chambers, right?”

“Most certainly, Master Scallywag,” Dan replied.

“I’d be about three thrusters to tha wind ‘bout now, having drank this much,” Scallywag said, holding up the bottle and sloshing its contents about. “But it ain’t havin’ no effect. Did ya accidentally have tha ship manifest some watered-down swill?”

“It is not the alcohol at fault. It is the room,” Shanks said. “I am sensing a large amount of energy being emitted from the walls of this chamber. No doubt it is meant to assist in the healing of whomever is within it. Likely, your body is being healed before the effects of intoxication can take hold.”

Scallywag frowned before capping the bottle and tossing it back to Dan. “Great,” he grumbled. “Well, that explains me. What about you, monk? Yer lookin’ as worn as ever.”

“I am fine.”

“So ya say, but ever since ya healed Jack, you’ve looked like death.”

“It was a most difficult procedure,” Shanks admitted. “It took a great deal out of me. I simply need time to recover.”

“Yeah, but shouldn’t this healin’ chamber have an effect on ya? We’ve been sittin’ here fer hours, and ya don’t seem any better for it.”

“I appreciate your concern,” Shanks replied. “However, with how time works here in the Conclave, I am not sure I have actually been in this room long enough to benefit from its effects.”

“Oy, there’s that ‘uniqueness’ everyone speaks about again,” Scallywag said. “Is someone gonna get around ta explainin’ to me what tha blazes is goin’ on around here?”

Before Shanks could reply, the door to the chamber opened. Green entered, accompanied by Paragon Pennywise, and a green-skinned Viridian with slicked back bright red hair and a large, bushy, bright red beard to match. His face was hard and weathered, and he appeared rather gruff and burly.
